MapleSEA and IP Blocking

One of the most shocking moves in the MapleStory community as a whole was the blocking of North American and European IP addresses by Asiasoft on their MapleSEA service.  Being a second outlet for many people outside of southeast Asia to get away from gMS, MSEAers in these regions have lost just about everything as they are now forced to join up with global.

This move, although quite sudden, is one that was to be expected at one time or another by Asiasoft.  MapleStory, like many other Asian-made MMOs, is licensed out for deployment in different regions, most of which are either published by Asiasoft, GameCrazy, (I think that’s what it’s called at least) or Nexon themselves.  Just as with gMS blocking IP addresses of regions with these licensed games, it’s only logical that MSEA would do the reverse.  The real truth of the matter is the fact that a game being provided to a certain region should stay in that region; if people in southeast Asia can’t play gMS, then people in North America shouldn’t be able to play MSEA.  It’s as simple as that.

The gMS website even explains this in a sense through its FAQ:

“Q: Why is my country blocked from Mapleglobal?
A: MapleStory exists in several language versions. We, Wizet,
license out MapleStory to licensees in South Korea, China, Taiwan, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand. Because we must protect our licensees’ interests, we must block users from those licensed regions from playing on MapleGlobal.”

(Source: Mapleglobal Website)

You think the other would be applied vice-versa, where IP addresses from outside each game’s service area are blocked as well, right?

Now, one other big point that this brings up is the future gMS players in regions that are getting new versions of MapleStory. This, once again, is a big deal to European players who currently have an open beta version of the game: eMS.  Right now the worry is that european players might be blocked from gMS once eMS goes live for good.

However, although this is in fact a possibility, this might not exactly be the case when the time comes.

First off, gMS has been open for 2 years; there are many European players out there that have characters into the 100s, 110s, etc…  all on gMS.  Since both gMS and eMS are run by Nexon, it is a possibility that they could continue to allow European players on gMS once eMS opens given that the European version doesn’t suffer too much.

Now, as per applying an actual situation to this: There have been times where players in certain regions were able to play another version of the game, and if I can remember this right, this was Thailand, who had thMS with MapleSEA opening a couple of months later.  With the fact that SEA includes Thailand and that both are managed by Asiasoft, they decided to allow players from Thailand to choose the version they wished to play, and thus they can freely play both versions.

That being said, just because Europe is getting eMS doesn’t mean that they’ll no longer be allowed to play gMS once it launches.  Of course, we have no way of knowing for sure; We’ll only know when the time comes.

OMG. If they block European players from Global MapleStory, i’m going to fu**ing kill them for good. MapleSEA has like 100 times more stuff than Global.

As I said though, I personally don’t think Nexon would block Euro IPs from gMS unless eMS starts to suffer, mainly because of the length of time that Europeans have been playing global.

Just like with Thailand being able to play MSEA and thailandMS

I understand the fact of protecting thier lisenceing but why after 2+ years has this become a factor, it should not be included as a reasoning for this blocking. I have put many long hours into this game to make that great lvl 120 ready for job change #4 but oh and behold now all of sudden I can’t play anymore. Simply for the fact that I did not buy anything with real money I will not be composated for my time I have spent in this game. But as other people have said (not trying to bash take this out if needed) since Nexon took over everything it has went from decent with AsiaSoft to worse with this.

one more thing i had fogotten to add it says “it has differnt lanaguage versions” well if this is so why is it that MSEA has english as its main lanaguage it seems

Personally I think Asiasoft was lazy; they didn’t wanna translate the game into multiple languages (Malaysian, Thai, and whatever Singapore speaks) like eMS so they just made it into English, since most Asians seem to have a basic understanding of it.

apperently the only contries not able to access MSEA are north america and Europe but if you have AOL you can still play MSEA no matter where you are which is total crap

the reason for that is because AOL unlike other ISPes has only 1 IP for every country its in so if they banned the AOL IP then anywhere in the world someone uses AOL will be blocked

and so europeans have now been blocked from maple global:[
although it doesn’t affect me much because i started after ems was released so its the only version i’ve had characters on,but i’ve heard and seen lots of people that are outraged at nexon for being forced to abandon their level 1XX and so on. I think i read somewhere that its actually just a mistake though, and that nexon is working on letting europeans back into gms O_o.

    anyone heard anything about that?

this is retarded… this game is in the US, Canadian, and UK version of the popular gaming magazine ” GameInformer ” so why the hell would they put an advertisement in this magazine when no one in those countries can play? IT’S BEYOND RETARDED!!

  15. May 20, 2008 at 5:34 pm

actually, i tried making accounts from China and Australia for SEA and they both won’t work.

i have been playing maple global for quite a while until recently…and ive got to quite a high level but when i moved to thailand im forced to play the SEA version and i have to start all over again… damn nexon…all my valuable items :’( isnt there a way for people like us who has to move to Asian countries, to still be able to play global? i mean its really stupid that they did that.. the choice should be ours to make which maple we want to play.
how would any foreign kid be able to understand the Thai version of maple..and half of the population in SEA doesnt even speak proper english… its so hard to understand some of them…all in all im just saying the choice should be ours to make.
